Parliament Square is defined by a large, central green lawn surrounded by a ring of twelve statues of political figures, including Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, and Abraham Lincoln. Laid out in the mid-nineteenth century, the square was part of a grand effort to clear away cramped, chaotic streets and provide an elegant, open civic space near the rebuilt Palace of Westminster.
