Shadwell Basin

Shadwell Basin is a large, rectangular body of water that acts as a quiet maritime square in Wapping. It is the only surviving section of the historic London Docks, which were once a vast, bustling complex that fueled the city's trade. Built between eighteen twenty-eight and eighteen thirty-two, the basin provided a vital entrance for ships arriving from the Thames. By the mid-nineteenth century, however, industrial shipping outgrew the basin's entrance, leading to its eventual decline and closure in nineteen sixty-nine.
