Hanbury Street is distinguished by its sharp architectural contrast, where restored eighteenth-century houses on the south side face the vast, modern brick blocks of the former Truman Brewery complex to the north. Originally laid out in the seventeenth century as Browne's Lane, the street was renamed in eighteen seventy-six for the Hanbury family, who were long-standing partners in the Black Eagle Brewery that eventually expanded to dominate the entire northern block.
