Town of Ramsgate

The Town of Ramsgate is recognizable by its narrow, riverside position wedged between the historic Wapping Old Stairs and the brick façade of Oliver's Wharf. While the current structure dates to seventeen fifty-eight, it occupies ground that has held an alehouse since at least the late fifteenth century, when it was known as The Hostel. By the mid-eighteenth century, the name changed to reflect the Kentish fishermen who landed their catches here to avoid river taxes imposed further upstream at Billingsgate Market.
