Phoenix Bakery

The Phoenix Bakery is identified by its logo: a potbellied boy dressed in traditional hanfu, hiding a box of sweets behind his back. Designed in the nineteen forties by the artist Tyrus Wong, the mascot appears on the signage of this family-run institution. Founded in nineteen thirty-eight by Fung Chow Chan and his wife, Wai Hing Chan, the bakery began as a place to sell traditional Chinese almond cookies and pastries.
