The forty-four acres of El Pueblo de Los Ángeles Historical Monument center on a public plaza, recognized by its historic gazebo and statues of figures like King Carlos the Third of Spain and Governor Felipe de Neve. This district marks the site where forty-four settlers, known as the pobladores, arrived in September seventeen eighty-one to establish a farming community. Their journey spanned more than one thousand miles from present-day northern Mexico, bringing together families of Native American, African, and European descent to build what would become the city of Los Angeles.
