Freedom Plaza

landmark

Freedom Plaza is defined by its expansive, raised granite and marble surface, which serves as a giant, walkable blueprint of Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s seventeen ninety-one plan for Washington. Black granite lines trace the streets and avenues of the city, while brass markers pinpoint the locations of the White House and the Capitol. This open, elevated terrace was completed in nineteen eighty as part of a larger effort to redevelop Pennsylvania Avenue into a ceremonial corridor.
