The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is recognized by the distinct green dome that rises above its massive, Neoclassical exterior on the north side of the National Mall. It opened in nineteen ten to house the federal government’s rapidly growing collections of natural specimens and cultural artifacts, which had previously overwhelmed the cramped spaces of the Smithsonian Castle and the Arts and Industries Building.
