The United States Capitol is distinguished by its massive, white cast-iron dome, which rises two hundred eighty-eight feet above its base. Since George Washington laid the cornerstone in seventeen ninety-three, the building has served as the meeting place for the United States Congress. Its construction was an arduous, century-spanning effort that survived being burned by British forces in eighteen fourteen and saw extensive expansion as the nation grew.
