The Decatur House is a three-story, red-brick Federal-style mansion on the northwest corner of Lafayette Square. Completed in eighteen eighteen, it is one of the few surviving residential designs by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect who served as the architect of the Capitol. It was commissioned by Commodore Stephen Decatur, a naval hero of the Barbary Wars and the War of one thousand eight hundred and twelve, who intended for the home to be a venue for fine entertaining.
