Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial rises as a massive neoclassical temple of white Colorado Yule marble at the western end of the National Mall. Designed by architect Henry Bacon and modeled after the Parthenon in Athens, the structure features thirty-six Doric columns that represent the states in the Union at the time of Abraham Lincoln’s death in eighteen sixty-five. The memorial rests on a foundation of one hundred twenty-two concrete piers driven deep into the once-marshy soil, a necessity to support its immense weight.
