Japanese Lantern

The Japanese Lantern is a two-ton granite monument standing eight and a half feet tall on the northwestern edge of the Tidal Basin. Carved in sixteen fifty-one, the structure is the oldest free-standing, man-made stone object situated outdoors in Washington. It features a square firebox, a roof-like covering called a kasa, and a round knob at its peak shaped like a Buddhist holy relic.
