The National Museum of African American History and Culture is recognizable by its three-tiered, bronze-colored metal lattice facade. This intricate screen contrasts with the surrounding white marble and stone monuments on the National Mall, drawing inspiration from traditional West African Yoruban crown designs and the ironwork crafted by enslaved artisans in the American South. Opened in twenty sixteen, the building serves as the nineteenth museum of the Smithsonian Institution and the only national museum dedicated exclusively to the African American experience.
