The World War II Memorial features fifty-six granite pillars arranged in a wide semicircle, each seventeen feet tall and topped with bronze wreaths of oak and wheat. Located on the National Mall, this memorial occupies the ground once held by the Rainbow Pool, sitting between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Architect Friedrich St. Florian designed the plaza to honor the sixteen million Americans who served in the armed forces and the millions who supported the war effort at home.
