Lafayette Square is a seven-acre public park immediately north of the White House, defined by its flat green space and an equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson at its center. The park is bordered by Pennsylvania Avenue to the south, Jackson Place to the west, Madison Place to the east, and H Street to the north. While it is now a site of national historical significance, the land once served as a graveyard, an apple orchard, and a racetrack before being used as a staging area for construction on the nearby White House in eighteen hundred.
