Carter G. Woodson National Historic Site

The Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site is a three-story Victorian rowhouse with a red brick façade, indistinguishable at a glance from its neighbors on Ninth Street. Despite its modest exterior, this building served as the command center for Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the scholar who dedicated his life to documenting the history of Black Americans. Between nineteen twenty-two and his death in nineteen fifty, Woodson worked here to challenge the prevailing absence of African American history in academic records, earning his reputation as the Father of Black History.
