The Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage occupies a grand, five-story brick building designed in the Renaissance Revival style. It sits at eighteen sixteen twelfth Street Northwest, a structure finished in nineteen twelve that served for decades as the Twelfth Street YMCA, the first YMCA in the United States built specifically for African Americans. President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone for the project in nineteen oh eight.
