Whitelaw Apartments

The Whitelaw Apartments are a four-story, U-shaped building of buff brick and limestone trim that sits on the corner of thirteenth and T streets. Completed in nineteen nineteen, it was developed by John Whitelaw Lewis, a former construction laborer who went on to found the Industrial Savings Bank. Lewis financed the project by encouraging community members to purchase shares in the property, and he commissioned Isaiah T. Hatton, one of the nation’s first African American architects, to design the structure.
