Walter Pierce Park Athletic Field

Walter Pierce Park is a five-acre expanse tucked between Adams Mill Road and Calvert Street, characterized by a large, open athletic field that sits atop a long-hidden history. While it functions today as a neighborhood hub with a dog park and playground, the ground underneath has served as a final resting place for more than eight thousand people. In the nineteenth century, this land held Washington’s first Quaker burial ground and the Mt. Pleasant Plains Cemetery, a site for the African American community.
