The Cosmos Club occupies the Townsend House, a grand Beaux-Arts mansion on Massachusetts Avenue distinguished by its Louis fifteen architectural elements. Originally designed by architects Carrère and Hastings for railroad heiress Mary Scott Townsend, the building was completed in eighteen ninety-nine and served as a private residence before the club acquired and renovated it in nineteen fifty.
