Vigilant Firehouse

The Vigilant Firehouse on Wisconsin Avenue is the oldest standing firehouse in the District of Columbia. You can recognize it by the white marble plaque set low near the ground, which commemorates a fire dog named Bush. Built in eighteen forty-four, the two-story brick structure features a gable facing the street and a stone inscription on the upper facade that reads Vigilant, Instituted, eighteen seventeen.
