City Tavern

The City Tavern is a Federal-style brick structure built in seventeen ninety-six that stands as the last remaining tavern from Washington’s founding era. You can identify it by the sign hanging outside that reads The Sign of the Indian King, a name it held during a portion of the nineteenth century. It served as a terminal for stagecoach lines and a center of civic life, housing the office of the Mayor of Georgetown and functioning as a meeting place for local government.
