The Joseph Mark Lauinger Memorial Library is defined by its brutalist exterior, marked by exposed granite chip aggregate and an imposing tower that stands in deliberate contrast to the ornate spires of the adjacent nineteenth-century Healy Hall. Opened in April nineteen seventy, the structure was the university's first standalone library, built to house a collection that had long outgrown the cast iron stacks of the older Riggs Library.
