The Exorcist Steps

These seventy-five steep concrete steps descend from the corner of Prospect Street and 36th Street down toward M Street. Built in 1895 by George Killeen, they originally functioned as a necessary pedestrian shortcut and lightwell for the adjacent Georgetown Car Barn. Before they became a global horror landmark, locals informally called them the Hitchcock steps.
