The Tombs sits inside a Federal-style townhouse dating from the mid-eighteen hundreds, distinguished by its below-ground entrance and a crypt-like interior of low brick ceilings and exposed stone. Founded in nineteen sixty-two by Georgetown University alumnus Richard McCooey, the restaurant was named after a fictional tavern mentioned in the T. S. Eliot poem, "Bustopher Jones: The Cat About Town."
