The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum is anchored by an ornate, Italianate Victorian mansion built in eighteen fifty-six. This building, standing at eight hundred South Halsted Street, is one of the oldest in central Chicago. It once served as the centerpiece of a thirteen-building social settlement founded in eighteen eighty-nine by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr. While the sprawling complex was largely demolished in the nineteen sixties to make room for the University of Illinois Chicago, this original residence and an adjoining dining hall were preserved to commemorate the groundbreaking work of the reformers who lived here.
