The limestone tower at two North Riverside Plaza is marked by its bold, Art Deco geometry and a history tied to the city's newspaper industry. Completed in nineteen twenty-nine as the Chicago Daily News Building, it was the first major structure in the United States built over active railroad tracks. Engineers had to incorporate a special venting system to manage locomotive exhaust, allowing the twenty-six story building to rise directly above the train lines feeding Union Station.
