The Chicago Theatre is recognizable by the towering vertical sign that spells out the city's name in glowing letters, a landmark that rises nearly six stories above State Street. Built in nineteen twenty-one, this structure was designed by architects Cornelius and George Rapp as the flagship of the Balaban and Katz movie palace chain. The exterior features an off-white, glazed terra cotta arch meant to evoke the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, with a circular Tiffany stained-glass window inside that displays the company logo: two horses holding ribbons of film.
