The Art Institute of Chicago is recognizable by the two massive bronze lions that guard its Michigan Avenue entrance. Founded in eighteen seventy-nine as both a school and a museum, the institution struggled in its early years, moving between several locations before settling into this permanent home. The building was constructed for the eighteen ninety-three World’s Columbian Exposition, serving as the site for the World’s Parliament of Religions during the fair.
