Grant Park is a vast, flat expanse of green space wedged between the high-rises of the Chicago Loop and the shore of Lake Michigan. Often called Chicago’s front yard, the park is almost entirely built upon landfill rather than natural shoreline. Its earliest boundaries were established by a simple 1836 map notation, which declared the area public ground to remain forever open, clear, and free of any buildings or obstructions.
