The Lakeside Press Building is marked by its heavy vertical brick piers and large, uniform windows separated by dark cast iron spandrels. Built in two phases starting in eighteen ninety-seven, this seven-story structure was designed by Samuel A. Treat and Howard Van Doren Shaw to serve as the headquarters and primary printing plant for the R. R. Donnelley and Sons Company. It represents a significant moment in the firm’s recovery, as founder Richard Robert Donnelley had previously lost his entire business in the Great Chicago Fire of eighteen seventy-one.
