The James M. Nederlander Theatre is recognizable by its ornate terra cotta facade and the glowing marquee that stretches across West Randolph Street in the Loop. Opened in nineteen twenty-six as the Oriental Theatre, it was designed by architects George and Cornelius Rapp as a lavish movie palace and vaudeville house. The interior was built to evoke a dreamlike vision of South Asia, featuring elephant-throne lighting, multicolored glazed Buddhas, and intricate mosaics of an Indian prince and princess.
