Lafayette Cemetery Number One occupies a single city block in the Garden District, defined by its stark, white brick perimeter wall and a series of ornate, above-ground tombs. Established in eighteen thirty-three, it was the first planned cemetery in New Orleans, laid out by city surveyor Benjamin Buisson with a cruciform design meant to accommodate formal funeral processions.
