The Payne-Strachan House at eleven thirty-four First Street is a classic Greek Revival mansion defined by its tall white columns and wraparound balcony. Built in eighteen forty-nine for cotton merchant Jacob Payne, the residence is known for a somber event at the end of the nineteenth century.
