Old State House

The Old State House is the oldest surviving public building in Boston, marked by a prominent second-floor balcony that overlooks the intersection of Washington and State Streets. Built in seventeen thirteen, this brick structure served as the center of royal government for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Inside, the second floor housed the Royal Governor’s Council Chamber and the first public gallery in the Western world, where citizens could observe their leaders at work.
