An eight-foot bronze statue of Benjamin Franklin stands on School Street, positioned before the historic Old City Hall. Erected in eighteen fifty-six, this was the first portrait statue of a human placed in any American city. The figure commemorates Franklin, a statesman and scientist who was born in Boston in seventeen oh six.
