The Massachusetts State House is distinguished by its massive golden dome, which sits at the crest of Beacon Hill. Designed by architect Charles Bulfinch and completed in seventeen ninety-eight, this Federal-style building replaced the Old State House as the seat of government for the Commonwealth. The dome was originally sheathed in wood shingles, but it leaked, leading the state to hire Paul Revere’s company to cover it in copper in eighteen oh two.
