The Duquesne Incline is a funicular railway defined by its pair of bright red, wooden cable cars that climb the steep hillside of Mount Washington. Completed in eighteen seventy-seven and designed by civil engineer Samuel Diescher, the system was originally built to haul cargo and provide a transport link for residents who lived atop what was then called Coal Hill. It rises four hundred feet over a track length of nearly eight hundred feet, moving at a thirty-degree angle.
