The Fourth Avenue Historic District is defined by its narrow, twenty-five-foot-wide streetscape, a feature dating back to the city's original seventeen eighty-four street grid. This compact corridor once served as Pittsburgh’s "Wall Street," acting as the high-stakes financial center for the region’s booming iron and steel industries. By nineteen oh eight, the banks gathered here held more capital than those of any city other than New York.
