Robert Wholey and Company is identified by the red-and-white striped awnings that stretch across its storefront on Penn Avenue. Founded in nineteen twelve as a poultry and egg shop in the suburb of McKees Rocks, the business moved to downtown Pittsburgh’s Diamond Market in nineteen forty-eight. When the city demolished that market to create a park in nineteen fifty-nine, the company relocated to this spot in the Strip District.
