Mellon Square

Mellon Square is distinguished by its black-and-white geometric pavement, which forms a series of interlocking shapes across the ground. Built in nineteen fifty-five, the park sits atop a multi-level underground parking garage, marking it as one of the first modern garden plazas of its kind in the United States. It occupies a full city block in downtown Pittsburgh, defined by raised granite planters and a central cascading waterfall designed to mask the sounds of the surrounding streets.
