Allegheny County Courthouse

The Allegheny County Courthouse rises above Grant Street with the heavy, rusticated granite walls and massive round-headed arches of a medieval castle. Designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and completed in eighteen eighty-eight, the building centers on an interior courtyard that was originally intended to flood the offices with natural light and ventilation. Its most distinctive feature is a clock tower that reaches over three hundred feet, a height that made it the tallest structure in Pittsburgh when it first opened.
