The Kruispoort, or Cross Gate, features two heavy towers joined by a narrow passageway, flanked by smaller octagonal turrets. It survives as a remnant of the city’s second defensive wall, first constructed between twelve ninety-seven and thirteen oh four. This structure is the third version of the gate on this site, as earlier iterations were replaced or destroyed, including a total loss in thirteen eighty-two when militia from Ghent seized the city. The masonry visible today dates from fourteen hundred.
