The Mount Royal Hotel stands at the center of Banff Avenue, its brick-and-stone facade occupying a prominent block in the heart of town. Originally opened in nineteen oh eight as the Banff Hotel, the property has been a local landmark for over a century. It became a significant part of the region's tourism development in nineteen twelve when Jim Brewster, a member of a pioneering local family, purchased the hotel for seventy-five thousand dollars. This deal, then one of the largest real estate transactions in the area, set the stage for decades of expansion and change as the town grew around it.
