Tunnel Mountain Trailhead (Lower Parking Area)

The lower parking area sits at the base of a peak that carries a name born from an engineering failure. In the early eighteen eighties, surveyors for the Canadian Pacific Railway proposed blasting a nearly three hundred meter tunnel directly through this mountain to keep the tracks along the Bow River. A supervisor eventually rejected the plan, calling it a blunder, and the railway was rerouted around the northern slope. Despite the complete absence of a tunnel, the name stuck.
