Le Maregraphe

landmark

The Marégraphe sits on the Corniche Président John Fitzgerald Kennedy, appearing as a modest, residential-style pavilion perched above the Mediterranean. Built between eighteen eighty-three and eighteen eighty-four, this building houses a rare mechanical tide gauge, known as a totalisateur, which remains in working order today. Its primary purpose was to establish the zero point for all altitude measurements across continental France, using a bronze rivet coated in platinum and iridium as the fundamental reference.
