The Abbaye Saint-Victor is a fortress-like church defined by its massive stone walls and crenellated towers that overlook the old port of Marseille. Founded in the fifth century by John Cassian, the abbey occupies a site that began as an open-air quarry, providing the stone used to build the ancient Greek port before becoming a necropolis for early Christians.
