The Cours Belsunce is a wide, tree-lined avenue that runs through the heart of Marseille, perpendicular to the famous Canebière. You can distinguish it by the modern library building, the Alcazar, which now occupies the site of a legendary former music hall. Created in sixteen seventy as part of a grand urban expansion ordered by Louis the Fourteenth, this space replaced medieval fortifications to connect the old city with new, sprawling quarters. Architects Mathieu Portal and Gaspard Puget designed the original layout, which once boasted uniform facades intended to mimic the grandeur of Italian palaces.
