The Vieille Charité is defined by its massive, windowless outer walls of pink and yellow-tinted stone from the Cap Couronne quarries. Built to enclose a rectangular courtyard, the structure reveals its intended purpose through an inward-facing design that shielded its residents from the city outside. At the center of this courtyard stands a Baroque chapel, designed by Marseille native Pierre Puget and capped by an ovoid dome.
