Fort Saint-Jean guards the entrance to the Old Port with its massive ramparts and the prominent, cylindrical Tour du Fanal. Built on the orders of King Louis the Fourteenth starting in sixteen sixty, the fortress occupies a strategic rise that once held a medieval commandery for the Knights Hospitaller. While the king claimed he wanted to protect the city from sea-based threats, the fort was positioned with its cannons facing inward toward Marseille, designed specifically to subdue local rebellions against royal authority.
